My old skydiving instructor had over 15000 skydives, he wasn't very good in the tunnel, some skills cross over but I don't think there is much to learn in the tunnel that you cant learn from the plane. And you need canopy skills, so you might as well do both at once?

All depends if you want to be a cautionary tale or not. Probably 90% of learning to BASE jump is subterminal body control and canopy skills. 0% of that is learned in the tunnel.
