Introduction of annual landing card at Monte Brento 2019 Can't Post

From March 1st 2019 we are introducing an annual landing card, if you wish to use the BASE bus service you will need to register online at the site below and buy your landing card. (30 euro)

http://www.ItalianBASEAssociation.com
Once you fill in the form and pay via PayPal you will receive your landing card number / QR code via email.

You will need this code (or the QR) to board the bus service.

We also ask all jumpers to jump with their telephone and ID card.

The website details why this system is being introduced and what the money collected will be used for.

The goal of the I.B.A. is to maintain legal access for BASE jumping at Monte Brento and the other Sarca Valley exits.

This decision was made following some of the incidents last season and after consulting with the local authorities, the mountain rescue and bus drivers.

Thank you for your cooperation and support
Maury, Cris, James and Marco
I.B.A. (non profit sports association)

Further clarification regarding the new landing card system

My email, PM and Whatsapp has been quite busy the past 24 hours, to save my fingers I will post answers to the most common questions:

Q. How much is the landing card?
A. 30 euro each year

Q. Do I have to buy the landing card?
A. No. You can use your own car to drive to San Giovanni and hike up to the exit just like in the old days. That said if you find the ropes, weather station and windsocks useful you could consider making a donation.

Q. Will the accounts be made public?
A. Yes, anyone will be able to request the accounts at the end of each year.

Q. Will the ground control and other people who perform work for the association receive payment?
A. Yes, we are copying the systems already in place in Norway and Switzerland. Volunteers will not make a sustainable long term solution. The GC salary will be small, we expect to sell 500 cards, minus the other expenses (website, ropes, weather station, signs, posters, mountain rescue donation etc) we are not talking about large sums of money left over..

Q. Why can't things stay as they are?
A. Brento has become the worlds busiest exit point. 15,000 jumps a year is like a small dropzone - at the moment it relies on the good will of the locals volunteering their own time to maintain / organise things with the occasional donation. It has simply become too much for us to handle.

Q. Why can't you just ask for donations?
A. The SBA landing card is obligatory but a large proportion of the jumpers don't buy one. Sadly we are not a mature group working towards a common goal.

Q. What will the ground control do?
A. The ground control will:
- check all jumpers land safely
- coordinate in case of incident (helicopter, tree landing area etc)
- enforce canopy time rules
- check people land away from the main road and houses (we had 2 road landings in 2018)
- coordinate bus queue which has sadly seen violent confrontation numerous times
- coordinate bus pick up if someone decides not to jump

Uncle Charlie, thanks for your hard work and dedication over the last couple of decades. You're a rock star and so are the MANY other volunteers that have helped out over the years.

If you're a BASE jumper, don't be a dick. Please buy a landing card and always strive to be a part of the solution and not part of the problem. Pay it forward every day with gratitude and always lend a helping hand to someone.

Landing card update:

So the reaction to the new initiative has been as we expected. 99% positive with a very vocal 1% complaining.

100+ jumpers have already purchased their landing cards.

The new ground control has been on site every day of the week, checking all jumpers land safely and providing assistance as needed (e.g. when a police helicopter landed in the LZ for a coffee stop).

Perhaps I should have underlined before the importance this new system has for public safety - one of the greatest risks we face at Brento is a jumper landing on the main road and causing an accident involving the public.

We want to prevent a Chamonix situation. Public safety is paramount.

So far we have already:
- purchased 200m of rope
- installed 80m of rope on the exit
- renewed the data connections for the weather stations
- purchased 2 radios and a solar panel charger
- ordered a weather proof box to be installed at the exit
- ordered a new wind sensor (after lightning damage!)

We thank everyone for supporting this initiative. Lets keep Brento safe and accessible :)

Correct, you fill in the form here: https://www.italianbaseassociation.com/ after it redirects to paypal and once you pay your landing card arrives via email. (The landing card takes the form of a personal QR code, just keep it on your phone to show when you get on the bus)
