Anyone here have experience with helmet radios Can't Post

I know it is a long shot but does anyone here have experience with using helmet radios (e.g., FRS/GMRS 2-way radio headsets like bikers, snowmobilers, and paintballers use)?

How about wireless PTT?

yes, I have a chatterbox in my motorcycle helmet, I can communicate with other riders up to about 80 mph, then it gets a little iffy. thats with a full face shoei helmet. its gonna be tough to use one at terminal, unless you have some kind of mic cover.

good question walt, a while ago I was looking at rigging something up for RW but the trouble was finding where to put the push-to-talk switch. @roostnureye - what kind of switch do you use on your bike?

Thanks for the response, guys.

Any way I look at it I come to the conclusion that the only reasonable way to go is a wireless PTT switch.

There is a really cool one on the market (http://www.amazon.com/Scorpion-EPW-Wireless-PTT-Button/dp/B004IX44N4) but it is expensive and forces you to use an adapter.

My current thinking is that I want to hack a cheap single-button wireless remote. The cheapest thing I've found so far is a cheap wireless doorbell setup. They can be bought for ten bucks or so.

The general idea is that I want to use cheap 2-way radios, wireless PTT, and a cheap headset with boom mic.

It's been done before but I want to figure out a really cheap way to build a system like this so that anyone can do it.

I will be using it for CRW but no doubt it will have applications for BASE.

I think what will revolutionize BASE is integration of Siri in helmets. Imagine all the possibilities! Your personal assistant, right there in your helmet.

mine has the noise cancelling mics that automatically pic up your voice. they call it duplex something or another. the switch and ptt would be allot better idea in my opinion.

The problem I have experienced with voice activated mics (VOX) on FRS/GMRS is that there is a delay between the time it detects voice and the time it starts broadcasting so the first second or so of the voice is missed. PTT makes a lot more sense to me.

Wasnt there some air to air communication device that was being sold to the skyjuming community awile back that coaches/insturctors were using to communicate with students? Was installed in full face helmets.

I could be thinking of something totally different?

Yep, but it's quite expensive, making it impractical (as well as unnecessary) for application on a large scale--like CRW bigway.

It is a system designed for the high-noise environment of freefall, so it has some pretty cool noise filtering built in. That's serious overkill for CRW.
